Sioux Fatzis May 10. The vice presidency dominates the convention debate as delegates weigh a minority credential report and potential Texas delegation votes. Minnesota remains aligned with ex-Congressman Towne, who appears to command a majority, while opponents stay active and pressing for changes.
Wellington R. Burt of Saginaw Michigan has filed suit in DuturH alleging Rockefeller Iron Ore group seeks to form a monopoly by restricting Mesaba ore supply and fixing high railroad freight rates. The case seeks to annul a Rockefeller lease on Burt’s iron property claiming underuse and failure to mine as required.
The Japanese tea dealers union plans aggressive measures to boost Japanese teas in the United States. It will post advertisements in public places and dispatch inspectors at U.S. and Canadian ports. Dispatches from Lourenzo Marques note the Sea Witch signalled for a tug, suggesting the boarding error mainly lies with the Sea Witch.
Labor war ends for Cook county building material suppliers as brick yards and mills resume sales to citizens and contractors employing union labor. About 2,000 workers back at sites while fewer than 300 were employed during the clash. Officials expect a general trades union strike fear to influence a labor convention next Sunday.
Havertax Michigan May 10 Intermittent rain cleared air over thousands of square miles along the southern shore of Lake Superior quenching smaller fires and abating larger ones. Damage to upper peninsula timber from three weeks of fires could exceed 500000 and may reach 1000000. Canada on the north shore also suffered heavy damage. further rain needed to end danger.
From Two Harbors Minnesota for the first shipping week of the season total ore moved averaged 20000 gross tons daily about 700 cars. In Quivenne Wyoming on May 10 two additional bodies were recovered from the Union Pacific wreckage at O Nell. The victims include a man and a boy, both unrecognizable, bringing the total recovered to six.
May 10 St. Louis reports a calm second day with no cars running on the main line until late afternoon when police massed along the route allowed a few suburban cars to move. A streetcar was shot at near the Baptist sanitarium wounding Frank Lebrecht, who died at the hospital. An explosion damaged a Merrimac Highlands suburban car, injuring no one as shots followed in the darkness.
In Washington on May 10 the senate debated in secret session a soft nosed solid steel projectile used by the navy on armor plates. Tillman highlighted Indian Head armor tests and argued against high government armor prices. Hale’s bureau of ordnance described tests showing penetration possible only under ideal conditions.
Rudolph and Adolph Bartosh, brothers from Orange, Barnett County, quarreled while intoxicated. Rudolph shot Adolph below the heart and then killed himself, the revolver toppling from his head. Adolph lies dying as the tragedy unfolds at Rudolph's house in front of his family.
