The war office reports Lord Roberts from Brandfort on May 4 that mounted infantry march to the Vet river and the rest of the force will reach there tomorrow. The railway to Brandfort is repaired and Hunter sends news of a successful Vaal passage at Windsorton without opposition.
Lord Roberts patrols 18 miles north of Brandfort as Canadian mounted troops join the advance across the Vet River. Reports say Irish-American brigade suffered heavy losses at Brandfort while Boer forces left the town. News cheers London. Kitchener and Roberts reach Brandfort. Mafeking relief seems near before the queen’s birthday.
Col M H Day longtime Black Hills businessman and political figure died from appendicitis after years of shaping the Hills development. He led state troops in the 1891 Sioux uprising. Interment planned in Oakland California. Extend Geneva Regulations. The senate ratified a treaty extending Geneva rules to naval warfare.
After a luncheon the Swedish majesties departed for their country residence marking the return to their home, following the event at the grand venue.

Rio de Janeiro marks the fourth centennial anniversary of Brazil's discovery with President Salies Campos unveiling a Cabral monument at Bahia and greetings from Emperor William, King Humbert, and the pope. The president also greeted visiting Portuguese and Italian ships aboard.

A new combine named the American Sheet Metal company is organized with capital of five million dollars. It will hold a Canton meeting to complete the organization. The group includes 29 corrugated iron and cornice plants nationwide, totaling 36 plants.
The Senate approved the army reorganization measure after three hours of discussion. It shifts staff appointments to details from the line, creates an artillery corps, expands West Point cadets, elevates generals, and allows retirement for suspended officers. The fortifications appropriation of about 7.5 million dollars also passed.
Honolulu reports no plague since the last death and sets April 36 as the target to lift quarantine if no new outbreak occurs. Quarantine would shift to focus on shipping and travel as needed. In Minotinger Michigan a man named Phillip Holub aged 30 died by suicide after reporting distress over workplace pranks.

A massive funeral train from Scofield carried 35 victims of the Scofield mine disaster with many relatives. Utah Governor Heber M. Wells urged rapid relief efforts and named a central subscription committee as funds reach 13 836,805. An oratorical contest in Osamos, Wisconsin drew 1,590 delegates from five states with top honors to E L Chickering. In Marrvettz Wisconsin a family near Creivitz is feared dead after forest fires.

The British steamer Quito, 3857 tons, arrived from Greenock to New York. She is chartered to carry a large cargo of food supplies for famine sufferers in India, with most of the cargo already ready for loading.

The War Department reports April results from General Otis with losses of 13 enlisted men killed and 3 officers and 24 enlisted men wounded. Enemy casualties are listed as 1,721 killed, wounded and captured, amid claims of ongoing insurgent surrender and early pacification.
