Loxpon May 4 It is announced that Brandfort has been captured by a combined British movement. General Tucker Pole Carew and Hutton led divisions to seize the town on the east center and west. Boers retreated hastily with four thousand moving to oppose the advance and Tucker's artillery silenced two Boer guns.
London reports General Broadwood’s cavalry reaching Isabelfontein north of Thaba N’Chu while General Hamilton bivouacks at Jacobsdahl and Tucker’s division moves from Koree Siding. Roberts commands 50 000 men along a 40 mile front advancing slowly as Boers defend rugged terrain and evacuations are eyed in Brandfort and Ladybrand.
Des Moines May 4 The state convention elected eight delegates at large to Kansas City and named alternates. Delegates include Cato Sells Ottumwa Charles Walsh Ottumwa John Murphy Dubuque George Baker Davenport Edward Evans Des Moines Avan Wagenen Sioux City L T Genung Mills County Daniel Stubbs Fairfield. Delegates urged to vote as a unit for Bryan and supported the Chicago platform with gold standard opposed and no 16 to 1 ratio. A fund for the Boers was authorized.
The Michigan Republican state convention opened at noon with Judge S A Cabell of St Johns as chair. Charles E Townsend of Jackson served as temporary chairman and denounced Bryan's criticisms of the national administration. Delegates at large named were Frank J Hecker Detroit Delos A Blodgett Grand Rapids Captain William E Parnall Calumet and William McPherson Howell with electors at large Major George L Wilcox Bay City and Perry Hannah Traverse City.
Porto Rico starts the new civil government with a comfortable treasury balance. Acting Secretary Meiklejohn received word that J F Bollander has qualified as treasurer and given a 100 000 bond. General Davis approved transferring 285 000 in military funds to the new official.
Admiral George Dewey and Mrs. Dewey were greeted by an enormous crowd at Union Station in St Louis as his special train arrived. Police cleared the way for carriages to Planters Hotel while continuous ovations and salutes marked the admiral and his party. The admiral and his wife largely stayed in their apartments that evening.
Buffalo May 4. The railroad strike is practically settled. Nickel Plate to follow New York Central action and Erie Lackawanna Lehigh Western New York and Pennsylvania to acquiesce. NYC concessions will add about $100 000 annually to regional rail expenses versus pre March 18.
Barrett Minn May 4 The village was totally burned by a night fire starting at 1 am in an empty building and probably incendiary in origin A northeast gale aided the blaze 28 buildings were destroyed and no fire protection existed as Soo Railway trainmen reported the flames spreading within minutes
The World reports a 10 percent wage increase for about 25 000 Standard Oil employees nationwide. The raise affects workers in New York New Jersey Pennsylvania West Virginia Minnesota Iowa Mississippi and Missouri.
May 4 report from Scofield estimates the death toll will settle near 250, not 300, with 50 bodies unburied and rapid decomposition prompting talk of cremation. Relatives arrive as 20 members of Odd Fellows and 20 Knights of Pythias are identified among the dead. A funeral train will carry bodies to several Utah cities. The French ambassador conveyed condolences to President McKinley and Secretary Hay.
Federal judge Lochren denies habeas corpus for Rafael Ortis, Porto Rican condemned to death by a military court in Porto Rico for killing a U.S. soldier. After the Paris treaty with Spain the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, and Ortiz has been confined at Stillwater penitentiary. Judge Willis ruled the military court lacked authority after the peace treaty.
In Bulgaria near Rustchuk on May 4 peasants armed with rifles disarmed troops and attacked others. Two officers and 15 soldiers are killed or wounded as about 3 000 peasants march on the town against two battalions defending it.
In the Portsmouth by election to fill the vacancy from Walter Quen Clough's withdrawal Liberal candidate T A Brandon defeated Conservative W Magenie by 610 votes.
