Reports from Scofield at 11 o clock confirm 178 dead with losses likely to climb. The mine superintendent notes daily arrivals prevent exact totals until all bodies are recovered. One estimate places 39 men inside the mine, implying at least 300 lives lost.
In Scofield the mine catastrophe left a town in mourning as rescuers from nearby mines rushed to retrieve dozens of dead. About 390 workers were employed across two connected mines with 80 perished in No 4. Investigators suspect giant powder caused the blast and dust ignition.
The Daily Telegraph editorial hints at generous American aid and broad sympathy for the Ottawa disaster. It asserts that the current catastrophe will prompt deeper sympathy for America than any event since the Maine loss.

In Iowa City on May 3 the women approved a $65 000 school and heating plant project by 455 to 84 while men opposed by 655 to 445. The bid passed only with women’s support, shaping the future high school building plans. London May 8 The main objective of Lord Roberts is to establish a line of British forts from one Free State frontier to the other at right angles to the railway to halt Boer raids southward. Boers forced to retreat from Thaba N'Chu, Milner promises Mafeking relief, and Kimberley preparations continue as garrison and supply lines are strengthened.
The Daily Mail dispatch reports 10 000 bags of coffee and 10 000 bags of sugar aboard a French steamer for a Pretoria government syndicate. Four more ships with similar cargoes are expected. Boers fortify Lydenburg and store provisions while reconstructing the Zelati railway to link Kompath Lyndenburg with the Netherlands as an eastern barrier.
The French steamer Cortalis rescued 12 Boer prisoners who escaped from Simons Town. They were in a small open boat with scant provisions and were landed at Lourenço Marques before traveling to Pretoria.
