Washington May 1 conferees on the joint resolution amending the Porto Rico act report a complete agreement. The measure extends the tenure of military officers in Porto Rico until their successors are appointed and approved by the Senate and House.
The report was adopted in both houses and the bill now goes to the president. Sections added by the house relating to corporations are substantially altered. The wording indicates the measure is moving toward final approval.
Consul Fowler reports in his annual dispatch that after Christmas China sees riots and murders targeting native Christian adherents. German forces burned villages, held village leaders as hostages, and diplomacy helped several escapes. indemnities have been paid, but western Shan Tung remains volatile and risks foreign lives this winter.
M J Scanlon of Scanlon Gibson Lumber Co returns from inspection in northern Minnesota. He cites severe damage in the Leech Lake Indian Reservation where a huge portion of 2 000 000 000 feet of standing pine is destroyed. Drought heightens concern as logs awaiting drive lie in streams in the First district. Fires threaten logs reaching water and may wipe out timber along the flame path.
Minneapolis May 1 Local lumber men expect the Hull and Ottawa fire to boost the white pine market. Canada has shipped white pine to the United States, but the Hull blaze and burned mills may shift trade toward Canada. An estimated 150 to 200 million feet of white pine burned along with mills of 260 to 3000 million feet capacity. The Hull interests are among America s largest and the market impact is considered limited.
The Republican caucus committee on senate business plans to take up the army appropriation bill after the Alaska code bill. They aim to press the Alaska bill quickly to clear the way for appropriation bills and anticipate adjournment in the first half of June once supply bills are completed.
Loxpon Kentucky May 1 The White-Howard feud of Clay County ends by agreement. The factions will not prosecute the several murder charges against the Bakers and will not appear against James Howard in the murder of George Baker. Indictment to be dismissed. James Howard is also charged with the Goebel murder at Frankfort. Many lives were lost in the feud.
Minnie M. Wray, a beautiful young woman, killed herself at the Palmer House with a revolver to her temple. A torn letter found in the waste basket suggested she “had wrecked too many lives already and must cease” and was addressed to A. N. Obler of Moline Illinois.

Washington May 1 1900 The Boer delegation will be received in Washington as private individuals not as an official delegation. They may not engage in negotiations with the state department and aim to influence U.S. policy through public Boer propaganda.
President McKinley signals intent to attend the Army of the Potomac reunion at Fredericksburg on May 25 and, if feasible, the Memorial Day ceremonies at Antietam on May 20, depending on public duties.
