Grand New York Banquet For President Harrison Ends Fatigued Night
The parade ended at 6:00 p.m. and President Harrison attended a lavish banquet at the Metropolitan Opera House with about 800 guests. Mayor Grant presided. numerous national figures and dignitaries spoke as toasts, and the event featured electrified service by the chief steward and a $35,000 cost. The president, pale and tired, delivered a late reply stressing patriotism, unity, and moral governance.

New York May 1 The centennial celebration reached its peak with the industrial parade led by Gen Butterfield. Fourteen miles of streets were used as the head column moved from Fifty-seventh Street and Fifth Avenue to Canal Street over five hours. In Cabcasco on May 1 during Chicago centennial celebrations a fireworks display went catastrophically wrong. A team of horses ran loose among spectators, injuring many as people were trampled. A fireworks package then exploded, severely burning several boys nearby. The most seriously harmed include Fred Eschenberg 16 Daniel Grant 13 Kate Conway Mrs George F Farrar Lizzie Howard and another woman whose clothing was nearly burned.
