Boers Resist Heavily as British Attack Near Driefontein Kopjes

Broadwood's cavalry met stubborn Boer resistance at Driefonteinkopjes near Bloemfontein. General Kelly-Kenny's division aided in heavy fighting as five regiments and artillery battled Boers who were driven from the center but clung to other kopjes. Nightfall halted the pursuit. Australians and Scots Greys supported the advance as forces moved northward.

British Find Harder Task Than Expected at Dreifontein

British forces pressed a 12 mile front against entrenched Boers near Abrahams Kraal and Petrusberg. Artillery duels opened the day, with General Broadwood probing for flank routes as General French and Porter supported. By evening the Boers had withdrawn, and prisoners were taken from President Krager's commando.

Boers Driven From Positions After Bayonet Assault

Lord Roberts reports from Driefontein that British troops under General Kelly Kenny drove Boers from two strong positions at the point of the bayonet. The Welsh and Essex battalions led the assault while capturing about 90 prisoners. Among the dead are Captain Eustace, Captain Lomax and Mr. McKartie. a dozen officers are wounded.

From Asvogel kop dated March 11 the Daily News reports the march continuing with no Boers in sight and British forces now only 25 miles from Bloemfontein. A Boer prisoner claims Mafeking has been raised.

News from Ladygrey Herchel and Aliwal North report rebels laying down arms in large numbers. Boers along the border are in serious straits as the rebels assert the Boers are worn down and seeking peace terms.

from Loudon March 12 the war office cites a telegram dated March 11 from Lord Roberts at Driefontein. He reports a repeated abuse of the white flag and surrender signals by Boer forces. He warns that further such acts may force his troops to ignore the white flag. Several staff officers witnessed the incident near Driefontein farm, resulting in wounds to several of his officers and men.

A Natal Mercury dispatch from Greytown reports Bethune's mounted infantry Umweti rifles and Natal police attacked Boer positions at Pomeroy on March 8. Fire intensified next day with Boers using pom poms and two large guns. Bethune withdrew south of Tugela after one wounded. Boer losses described as considerable.

British Casualties to Date and Landslide At Sanpon

The British report casualties to date: killed 2,418 wounded 8,747 died of disease 1,290 missing 8,483 total 15,677. A landslide at Sanpon destroyed six houses at noon. William McLeod is missing and may be under ruins. Mrs. Mary Nash Mrs. W. Fogg and Mr Livatt seriously injured.

Thirty Were Drowned As Steamer Cuvier Sunk

The British steamer Cuvier was rammed in the Straits of Dover on March 9 by an unknown steamer. Thirty crewmen were below deck when the collision occurred and could not reach the boats as the vessel sank in under five minutes. Survivors landed at Calais report a large hole and the other vessel fled.

Patrick H. Kelly of St Paul files in probate to claim dower rights in his wife’s estate. Mrs Kelly died Jan 29 1899. will probated. debts paid. estate valued about 45000. property left to her father Michael Morley of Montreal and to daughters. Kelly not mentioned in will. Also Minnesota Stock Breed Federation offers 1000 in cash prizes for fat cattle hogs and sheep with state and fair sponsorship.
