A strong British column including the Kimberley Light Horse moves north from Kimberley toward the Vaal River crossing at Fourteen Streams where the railway bridge has been wrecked. Boers are expected to resist the crossing.
London reports say Mafeling to be relieved once British force reaches Kimberley to lift the siege. Lord Roberts may have arranged with Cecil Rhodes for use of the De Beers Kimberley light horse. Boers raid in Cape Colony prompts martial law. Chamberlain seeks 2500 Australian bushmen for pursuits in Transvaal guerrilla zones. Mobilization at Torbay includes fifteen battleships.
A Daily Standard dispatch from Osfontein reports Lord Roberts's army in a dominant setup. Sixth division under General Kelly-Kenny covers five miles of kopjes to the Modder south, while Seventh division under General Tucker sits center south of the river. Colville with the Ninth division is on the north bank, with French leading cavalry on the left and Ridley-Martin’s mounted infantry on the right. Boer forces occupy scattered kopjes and hills, but are surrounded by open plains and face water, with health and morale high and limited fighting evident.
General French observed a Boer column moving northwest and sent a squadron to maintain contact. About 150 Boers pursued next, advancing around a hill but retreated under British shelling. They opened fire with Maxims and a 15 pounder from a kopje before the trek was temporarily stopped.

Lieutenant Elgar F. Keeler of the Ninth Infantry was shot in the abdomen and killed in a village six miles north of Tarlac while seeking hidden rifles. A Filipino guide led him into a house away from his command. In retaliation soldiers burned the village and killed 34 insurgents.
St Pavn March 6 Mayor Kiefer advocates city run utilities including telephone lines street cars lighting plant and paving. He says he has studied the issues and believes municipal ownership is a good thing.
Milwaukee endures the season's worst blizzard with suburban streetcar service halted and city lines kept open only by plows. Steam trains run ten minutes to an hour late as about eight inches of snow piles up with no abatement in sight.
