A Times dispatch from Osfonteinw dated March 2 reports growing telegraph difficulties as Lord Roberts advances. Forage is scarce, mobile commandos hover near the main body, and General Joubert is gathering forces at Abrahams kraal to resist. President Steyn urged the burghers to recall Majuba.
General Brabant’s colonial division advances after a night march and attacks the Boers at La Buchagnesnek on the Dordrecht Jamestown road. British shell fire from three positions drives Boers to retreat on the right flank as two Boer guns appear in action.
London dispatch reports General Buller notes Boers abandoned the siege after Cronje fell into General Roberts's hands at Paardeberg. Natal advance halted to move guns and stores. Boer retreat spurred by Buller’s victory. Natal nearly free of republican forces. Roberts focuses on concentrating forces with transport as main challenge.
Dispatch from Lord Roberts dated Osfontein March 4 notes General Cronje and 4,000 prisoners thanking him for kindness. Reports say Achtertange held, Joubert Siding rail link opening, Norvals Pont Bridge contested, Stormberg Boer numbers shrinking, Mafeking active defense, and Osfontein position unchanged.
In Graaf Reinet near Port Elizabeth about 70 Dutchmen incited by Bondites attacked loyalists celebrating Ladysmith relief with sticks and stones injuring many. A parallel riot occurred at Stellenbosch. Rebels from Griqualand, aided by 600 Dutch farmers, occupy Eenhardt after a sharp clash with the Kaffirs and march southeastward.

At a Society of Ohio banquet in New York Bishop Andrews of the Methodist Episcopal church criticized narrow patriotism and urged equal regard for people of all races. He spoke during the visit of President McKinley, who attended a Sunday service and delivered a significant address opposing imperialism.

President James O'Connell of the International Machinists' union spoke at a Chicago Federation of Labor meeting urging closer employer worker understanding. A blaze at a seven story lodging house at 44 to 48 Bowery in New York killed five people and injured three. The dead include Charles Buttie John Clark Edward Doyle Henry Jackson and an unidentified man. The fire was discovered shortly after 2 o'clock with smoke from the fifth floor as 132 rooms in the building housed 90 occupants. Police and firefighters conducted rescues and brought the flames under control with limited structural damage.

Dusogue, Ia March 5 Most Rev John Hennessy first archbishop of Dubuque died at 2 25 pm aged 74 after a long illness marked by brain paralysis He was a famed orator theologian and pioneer educator noted for founding a large seminary and leading Catholic parochial schools He was ordained in 1850 and served as bishop of Dubuque from 1866 becoming archbishop in 1893 Funeral was set for Thursday.

A pioneer missionary of the Northwest he founded the first Congregational church at Stanley Falls Minnesota and narrowly escaped with his family during the Minnesota Indian war. He served as pastor of the Congregational church at Springfield from 1881 until a year or two ago.
Congressman Joseph Sibley of the Twenty Seventh district pledges to split his two year salary between five district hospitals. Franklin and four other cities receive $1,000 checks each, with each hospital set to total $2,000 by the end of his term.

Dr S A Guilbert, a renowned physician and former state board of health president, a leading Mason in the West, died in Dubuque at age 72. In Valleyfield Quebec, March 5 a strike at the Montreal Cotton Company's mill affecting 3,000 workers was settled with a 5 percent wage advance.
