Report from PaaRDEBERG dated February 1888 states about 7,000 Boer irregulars are massing on the British front while cavalry skirmishing begins to the east. General Roberts delays any action until prisoners are accounted for after General Cronje's surrender.
A Kimberley dispatch to The World reports General Cronje aimed to cut through Lord Roberts forces last Sunday night but failed when Boer scouts outside the British lines did not seize Skopje to aid him. Cronje surrendered with prisoners including women and children. British forces claim Krupp field guns, Vickers-Maxims, other Maxims and 5,000 small arms captured. Boer intrenchments described as deep ditches with domestic goods found amid the ruins. shell fire had little effect.
London erupts in jubilant parades and songs as crowds flood the Mansion House to the West End. Bands march through streets and stations overflow with patriotic displays. clubs cafes and public buildings glow with flags bunting and electric lights.
The War Office announces estimates exceeding 61 million pounds and a programme to deploy 56,000 fresh soldiers in addition to 80,000 already afloat. Lord Roberts will command a force nearing a quarter of a million. Woolwich received orders for 224 new guns, 140 naval. Arsenal workers number 25,000 with 8,000 more to be added. New York dispatch reports Russian government representatives have opened talks with Bermund-White Coal Mining Co to buy and ship about 500000 tons to Baltic ports.
