A Chamber of Deputies sitting faced suspension amid clashes between rioters and police. Stones flew, shots fired, three injured and a policeman stabbed. Civilians uprooted paving stones, tram cars burned, crowds dispersed and regrouped. Civil guards and troops deployed. 85 arrests reported as city retained revolutionary air.
Ex-Governor Robert E. Pattison arrives in Atlanta and urges rapid suppression of Filipino forces if 100 000 or 200 000 men are needed. He repeats staunch support for the current policy, warns against treaty concessions with Spain, and says the US must finish the Philippines matter despite foreign complications.
New Richmond needs funds and building material after a cyclone. Chairman Q H Ingram of the relief effort reports an estimated $750000 in losses while subscriptions total about $80000, much spent on debris removal and temporary aid. Cash should go to the Hudson treasurer and materials to New Richmond relief committee.
Deputy Sheriff W L Bache was shot in the side during a Chinatown gun battle with highbinders in San Jose California. Sheriff Langford and deputies engaged a group firing on Lee On Poon and Hip Sing Tong leaders. One Chinese may be killed. four highbinders arrested.
The plan envisages delaying operations until after the rainy season. Aguinaldo must yield or be forced, with volunteers to Manila as fast as secured. Thousands are already en route and more will follow. General Otis will order volunteers home once enough troops deter rebel attacks.
Washington June 30 The first volunteers for service in the Philippines will come from skeleton regiments formed by General Otis. Drill and marksmanship instruction will precede deployment, with three months needed to train new recruits. Some volunteers abroad may return briefly for short service before joining Otis. The rainy season delays urgent need, transport is adequate though chartered ships possible, and political pressure rises for commissions.
A crowd of about 80 men and boys chased a non union conductor and motorman on Jennings avenue in Cleveland. The conductor fired his revolver in the air but hit no one and sought refuge in a house. Police arrested the conductor on a charge of shooting in violation of ordinances.
Five river workers were drowned when their skiff capsized on the Mississippi River about two miles above Clarksville Missouri. The men were government laborers engaged in river improvement work.
Harvard wins all three boat races against Yale in New Loxpox, Cambridge. The varsity eight takes the 4 mile race by six and a half lengths in 20 52, the freshman eight wins the 2 mile event by two and a half lengths in 9 3334, and Harvard’s substitute four prevails by six lengths in 10 31 amid clear water and light wind. Steamer interference mars the finish as Yale battles but shows no distress.
June 30 Austin reports South West and Central Texas struck by severe rainstorms. Railroads including the Missouri Kansas and Texas and Houston and Texas Central suffer major disruption as bridges wash away. Hundreds of acres of South Texas farmland flooded and cotton damage feared. Brazos rivers rise rapidly washing banks and flooding miles of bottomlands.
Dr Babbat, bacteriologist of the board of health, reports examination of the glands of two Japanese drowned while escaping the Nippon Maru shows bubonic plague bacteria. The ship remains in quarantine after three suspicious deaths on its voyage from China and Japan to Honolulu. High price for farm lands reported as James Fitzpatrick buys Isaac Garmoe farm at 100 dollars per acre. adjoining Wasem and Crawford farms lie over gypsum veins with stucco mills planned, Crawford mill under construction.
London reports Sir Julian Pauncefote the British ambassador to the United States will retire from the American embassy in April next. In Detroit Louis Bush of New York is jailed on suspicion of smuggling $20,000 worth of diamonds from Canada. Diamonds found tied around his ankles wrapped in diamond paper.
Rome Rome correspondent reports the pope's great prostration and a slight fever after recent religious ceremonies. He was confined to bed Thursday amid exertion during ceremonies.
Fire Commissioner Scanlan names Edward F. Croker acting as permanent chief of the Greater New York fire department at a $6,000 yearly salary. The new chief is a nephew of Richard Croker.
