Washington June 28 Officials said preparations to rush reinforcements to General Shafter and for the Porto Rican expedition are under way. St Louis June 28 In the arrest of Alonzo J Whiteman formerly of Du Inth Chief of Detectives Desmond thinks he has captured probably the boldest forger in the country According to the chief s theory Whiteman evidently intended working his way to New York and then to Europe and was prepared to carry 125000 in cold cash out of the country with him Whiteman is wanted in Boston for obtaining goods by false pretenses Whiteman s clothing trunks were opened and in them were found checks on various banks several letter heads and envelopes of the Lawrence National Bank of Lawrence Kan and a letter of introduction to the cashier of the First National Bank New York City asking that courtesies be extended him signed by the cashier of the Lawrence bank Four checks duly signed and endorsed in accordance with the letter were found ready for presentation to the bank In the same bank were 15 checks on the Lawrence bank perforated for 114750 and eight checks on the same bank not perforated
