Washington June 26 The Senate completed the wool silk and tobacco schedules of the tariff bill and now must revisit the rest of the bill. Hides gloves coal tea and beer remain to be considered on a second reading. Progress was rapid with carpets a stubborn point and Senators Teller and Mantle voting with Democrats on silk duties.
The Senate committee on Pacific railroads reports favorably a resolution by Senator Harris of Kansas urging redemption of the Union Pacific railway from prior liens and foreclosure of the government mortgage. The measure, amended to suspend selling U S interests and the sinking fund until Congress acts, was approved unanimously with Harris authorized to report.
The privileges and elections committee briefly considered a report by Senator Hoar on Hon. H. W. Corbett from Oregon. The committee declined to act and ordered the report printed with opposing views. The matter is understood to be postponed to the next session with no formal action.
A Holland protectionist victory is reported defeated by a leading Amsterdam flour importer. The free trade majority in Holland secures the future of the American flour trade, hailed by U.S. millers as a major success. In Powder Springs a threshing machine was destroyed by a bolt. In Carrollton John Davis Jr and Samuel Connie both white were killed by lightning. At Milner a bolt struck J A Farley farm killing Samuel Lawrence a colored laborer and injuring Farley’s son while burning and flooding widespread property losses are expected.
In North Dakota on June 26 the jury found Normand guilty of murdering Andrew Hilestad and three Hilestad boys near Larimore on May 1. He received life imprisonment after the brutal killings and the mother was attacked to force her compliance to save her two younger daughters. The verdict sparked criticism and talk of lynching in rural areas.
In Columbus Ohio on June 26 the national executive board of United Mine Workers considered delaying action. The report indicates the union will wait and not strike at present, postponing until fall.
