Abe the eagle and other regimental pets in Civil War tales
Soldiers of the army prized living mascots from dogs and cats to gamecocks and a famed eagle carried by the 8th Wisconsin Infantry. Abe, a gray eagle named after Abraham, perched atop a six foot staff during battles including Corinth and Red River, while other regiments kept bears, cats, and even a wild cat as trophies and companions.
