Washington notes say the Hawaiian Islands annexation treaty was read in the Senate after Executive Session. Senator Davis moved to publish the message and treaty. Senator Gray objected. Opponents pledged to stay through summer to block ratification while supporters argued the move aligns with long standing U S policy.
Washington June 17. Senator Perkins of California, a Republican, will oppose immediate consideration of the treaty this session, arguing the questions are too general for hasty disposal. Kyle reports 55 definite yes votes but 60 needed for ratification. eight of eleven Foreign Relations Committee members are pledged to support. Davis, committee chair and ardent annexationist, intends to push the treaty vigorously.
