The Pioneer Press reports in depth on a census fraud scheme in Minneapolis. Seven enumerators were arrested by Deputy U S Marshal Daggett and brought before U S Commissioner McCafferty, each pledging not guilty and posting 500 bonds to await examination. The scheme built fake households by cross matching names from multilingual lists, housing data, and payroll records, inflating Minneapolis census counts with thousands of fictitious residents.
Sacramento June 18 Governor Waterman of California calls for an end to prize fighting within state borders. In a letter to the attorney general he cites disgraceful, degrading exhibitions in alleged scientific contests and asks measures to prevent further such shows.
Washington June 18 report the death of John G. McElhone in Atlantic City New Jersey. He had served as chief stenographer of the house of representatives for many years. He was sixty five years old.
Indian Commissioner Morgan and Congressman Gifford helped extend a 3000 dollar maintenance appropriation for the Pierre South Dakota school, lifting the next fiscal year to 65000 dollars. A Cheyenne uprising in Montana was discussed as 1200 Indians lacked homes. The committee approved a 10000 dollar addition to the Indian bill to buy the Indians’ reservation, with possible relocation to Minnesota under future location decisions.

Aqzunoy June 18 The Indians gather in two camps on Tongue river with the latter under military surveillance. No outbreak is reported as the country remains patrolled. A council is expected between Cheyenne chiefs at Custer to urge explanation of their desires.
A Birmingham dispatch reports a pitched battle between Negroes and whites at Brookside Alabama. Tom Redmond a Black man was killed and Jim Dowell wounded. White man Tom Ayers was lightly wounded. Several Black men were captured as whites threatened lynching. Further bloodshed feared.
The Democratic state convention is in session in Little Rock. James P. Eagle is likely to be nominated for governor and B. B. Chisom is named as acting state. It is understood the convention may endorse Grover Cleveland as the 1892 Democratic presidential nominee.

A Winnipeg trial heard charges against an executive committee dignitary. A Mississippian social event contrasted with a drowning death of a boy during a game near a river.

Washington June 18 The secretary of the interior requests a large increase in clerical staff for the Pension Bureau. The commissioner asks for twenty principal examiners at 2000 a year, thirty clerks at 1800, five at 1600, 110 at 3400, 100 at 1200, forty five at 1000, sixty copyists at 900, a private secretary at 1800, two stenographers at 1600, ten messengers at 840, and fifteen assistant messengers at 720. Provisions tied to anticipated workload from pension legislation. Also, House panel backs a bill to limit post office clerks' hours to eight daily for first and second class offices for salaries up to 400. If excess hours occur, pay is adjusted.
