Illinois Freight Rates Show Big Gains and Declines
Ex-railroad commissioner George M Bogue testified before the Senate committee on inter state commerce detailing Illinois railroad legislation since 1871 and the board that fixed freight rates. He cited rising gross earnings from 1877 to 1884, expenses and net earnings, and argued against federal rate fixing while noting class rate changes and local freight bureau views. He endorsed 100 pound units for charges and highlighted Chicago merchants perceptions of discrimination as largely imaginary.
