Socialists plan July Fourth grand demonstration in St. Louis

St Louis Socialists hold secret meetings despite ban by city authorities. Three branches met to plan a Fourth of July picnic style demonstration, fundraiser for persecuted friends. Tickets printed on lurid cards claim 15 000 attend. Speakers include William J Gorsuch of Baltimore and exiled Prince Kropotkin, then in London bound for the U S.

Rioting in Sligo as Protestants face arson attack

Sunday calm follows a Saturday riot that burned an Orangeman’s residence in Sligo and damaged Protestant homes and chapels. Catholics sparked clashes after rails around the bishop’s palace were destroyed. Police and military cleared streets with bayonets. sixteen rioters arrested. A bootmaker’s house at Larihill burned. six civilians rescued from a near fatal blaze. Crown solicitor Davys fired on a crowd to disperse wreckers. large reinforcements arrived. The town is quiet again.

Suicide of a well dressed Chinaman in Harlem River area

The body of a well dressed young Chinaman was found Sunday afternoon hanging to a tree limb at One Hundred and Seventieth street and Harlem river. Examination showed he had committed suicide. His body was not identified. A separate report from Cleveland notes a 9 year old girl and two year old boy escaped a lecherous assault by George Merrick after luring them to a secluded spot. Merrick was beaten by the father and later rescued from the lake by bystanders and detained for trial.
