Reports from St. Louis indicate Platt Quay and others discuss a financial plank on the money question aimed at securing support against McKinley. Opposition factions push for a gold standard declaration, risking division with McKinley backers in the middle west.
In St. Louis on June 13 a vice presidential selection riddle unfolds. Garret A Hobart of New Jersey and H Clay Press of Tennessee emerge as leading contenders. Evans may prefer governor runs in Tennessee, while others weigh New York candidates like Morton and Fassett. the consensus favors a non New York pick with Hobart favored.
Ex Governor Merriam arrives at St Louis and occupies suites at the St Nicholas Hotel. He is mentioned as Minnesota member of the resolutions committee and as a possible candidate for permanent chairman amid convention maneuvering. Senator Thurston confirms no definite selection before delegations arrive.

A major conference in Senator Quay's rooms included Senator Quay Hon Mark Hanna Hahn from Ohio Hobart from New Jersey Samuel Benjensen of Connecticut and State Senator Andrews of Pennsylvania It was decided Quay should retire from the contest and McKinley was seen as having over 500 uncontested votes prompting nomination by acclamation and quick convention adjournment.
The national Republican committee in St Louis on June 13 and by 11 o clock had acted on contests for 96 convention seats, with 70 remaining. Thirty six were resolved, including Delaware, Louisiana, Arizona, and Virginia Mississippi Alabama districts, while neither Delaware delegation was seated and Arizona awarded half seats to each side. Louisiana seated 16 delegates with five for Reed and the rest for McKinley. The committee proceeded in order regardless of party presence.
