Wealthy Farmer's Bigamous Marriage Case in Indiana
In 1863 Henry Grove of Hamilton County married Sarah Shaw of Connerville and moved to Indianapolis. Grove died. Shaw claimed divorce, while Grove’s first wife had been in the poor-house 23 years believing she was legally kept there. The trial found no divorce, restoring Grove’s widow rights and denying Shaw any share. The Sun notes Mr. Winston’s Persian mission resignation tied to failed matrimonial plans.
