The text chronicles Benjamin Wade's career from early education and law to his Ohio bar admission, U.S. Senate tenure starting March 4, 1868, and key roles on judiciary and postroads committees. It notes his 1851 Ohio Supreme Court appointment, 1840s gubernatorial candidacy, and later return to Columbus practice.
The subject served in the Twenty-ninth Congress voting for the Wilmot proviso and supporting an extension to Mexican territory. He opposed repealing the Missouri compromise and nullification or secession. In 1807 he campaigned four months, won the legislature for his party, and touted negro suffrage gains, aiding his national prominence as a potential presidential candidate.
A letter from General Black arrived just before Thurman’s nomination. He says he remains loyal and disputes the convention’s choice, writing from Washington on June 5 through T. M. Pat Bean at the Southern hotel about his hopes for a place in the ticket and his long political effort.
An exhibit included a sketch of Grover Cleveland and a floral bouquet forming a portrait of Mrs. Cleveland. Other devices showcased Niagara Falls formed in five 300 foot sections, a Capitol at Washington, the White House, and a naval scene of the Monitor and Merrimac.
The engraving shows a wooden mallet used to call the convention to order. It was presented at the Democratic National Convention in St Louis by Thomas M Patterson of Colorado and used only briefly.
