Diabolical Rebel Atrocities Reported Near Camp in Arkansas
A Chicago Journal correspondent recounts a brutal incident near Gen. Caterhaus’s advance in Arkansas. A picket of about 60 men from the 17th Missouri Infantry attacked by 500 rebels left seventeen dead and over thirty wounded, with amputations and mutilations described. A surgeon aiding the wounded was later found hung and hacked. The attackers, including Texan Rangers and Butternuts under Hicks and McKeel, reportedly carried off wounded and horses.
