On June 6 1888 in St Louis the Democratic national convention opened with over 600 delegates from Western Northern Eastern and Southern states present. The Dakota delegation was seated separately from the main floor while Thurman’s prospects for a second place on the ticket were discussed and the Old Roman crowd dominated the atmosphere.
In St Louis on June 6 delegates assembled as Chairman Barnum presided. Bishop Grayberry of Tennessee gave the prayer, Temporary Chairman White expressed satisfaction at a California appointment and predicted a Democratic victory in the pending political contest. The visiting clubs inspection matter was referred to the national committee. The second session started at 10 a.m. and work began immediately.
St Louis dispatch notes a single contest likely over the tariff plank. A faction leaning toward protection opposes Mills bill sentiment and nerves strain for a hot fight. Henry Watterson, chair of the resolutions committee, says a tariff plank will reflect the president's message but not whether it will extend further.

The administration delegates were favored as the committee closely examined both sides claims and seating standards. Day, a member of the national Democratic committee, was noted for assisting his faction with convention tickets.
At the St Louis convention Mr Patterson of Colorado presented a solid silver gavel, accepted by President White with a quip about being ruled by silver. In Aberdeen, the Law and Order League has arrested nineteen saloon operators for local option violations, with bonds set at 200 dollars.

News from Boom Island Minneapolis notes Calligan’s loss after a final land office decision. A cave-in at the Mullen tunnel injures several workers delaying repairs. In Berlin, the German crisis persists with Bismarck expected to stay, while Von Putkammer plans resignation.
In Red Wing Minnesota the Bible School convention opened at noon with committees appointed and reports read from state schools. Officers were elected at 3 PM. Rev George Reiman spoke on Normal Class Work. Children’s meeting followed at 4 80. Attendance noted as small.
