The Jefferson Davis funeral train arrived in Richmond in the morning. Veterans from Lee and Pickett led the procession as the casket was moved to the hearse and then to the state capitol where it lay in state until 8:30 pm. Crowds of about 25,000 viewed the bier. The line of march proceeded to Hollywood and local houses displayed black and flag decor. Bells tolled as flowers were scattered and taps rang at the grave. Women decorated the graves of 16,000 Confederate soldiers.
The Atchison raises new Western rate levels with round trips to Chicago at 87.50 from Colorado points and 17.50 from Missouri. A severe cyclone and series of storms swept through Rosedale Mississippi and Hope Arkansas. Reports say five killed at Rosedale. Hope saw demolished buildings and ruined farms. William Martin’s farm washed away. Judge Gibson’s farmhouse damaged. Guernsey and Garner’s mill blown down with injuries reported.
A street car motor collided with a freight train at a railroad crossing around 2 PM. One man, K. F. Holmes, was killed when crushed under wreckage as two freight cars toppled into a ditch. Injured include J. E. Bixley with a fractured limb J. W. Hoyman with internal injuries Miss Maud Bryant severely injured George Burke and Herman Karr with cuts. Authorities faulted lack of protective warnings at the crossing and poor visibility of the backing freight train.
Ex-State Senator John J. McFarlane, once president of American Life Insurance and linked to Bank of America, surrendered and pleaded guilty in quarter sessions. Judge Hare sentenced him to four years in the Eastern Penitentiary after years as a fugitive in Brazil. C C Sturtevant secretary of the chamber of commerce died shortly before noon in Minneapolis at age eighty. The longtime civic leader had guided local business interests and community efforts for decades. He is survived by his family and colleagues who remember his dedication.
Amicago reports the Hiawatha statue by Fjelde, intended for the Minnesota state building, has arrived. The plaster figure, executed in Minneapolis, was funded by numerous contributions from Minnesota children. A Berlin excursion party also arrived, led by Count and Countess Paul.
