Lord Roberts reports a British reverse a few miles from Pretoria. A squadron of Scots Greys two guns and ninety infantry are captured in the engagement.

Edmund Cook as superintendent of public lands. Lena Aasved as superintendent of public instruction. W T La Folletts as railroad commissioner. Fred Brown as secretary of state. Charles D Tiedrick as state treasurer. F J Tracy as state auditor. The platform endorsed Sioux Falls, praised the national administration, and urged a Philippines protectorate and Porto Rican citizenship. Delegates pledged to support Pettigrew for senator and Towne for vice president unless directed otherwise by the national committee.
In Indianapolis on August 8 W J Bryan and Adlai E Stevenson will be formally notified as Democratic presidential and vice presidential nominees. Representative Richardson of Tennessee confirmed the plan, with Senator Jones chairing the national committee. A large popular demonstration is expected.
Washington reports 1200 pauper Italians are moving from Mexican ports toward the United States through Eagle Pass Texas. Forty three have already been stopped, and authorities request 10 mounted men to patrol the Rio Grande to prevent crossings. The authority is granted.

The Tao Tai of Shanghai protested to the powers over the alleged Russian slaughter.
A courier from Sir Robert Hart in Pekin delivers a June 25 dispatch saying close to goodbye near the end. Reports from Che Foo note a Chinese merchant received a June 30 letter stating the legations were demolished and foreigners killed. A robust rumor says 30,000 Russians march on Pekin from the north.
