The store forecasts a stronger Summer business with big price cuts. Last month’s huge stock moved little, and many lines must close out this month. No items are reserved, and more discounts apply across departments to clear the furniture inventory.
The North Dakota Republican state convention at Grand Forks nominated a full ticket led by Thomas F. Marshall of Dickey as congressman and D. E. Morgan of Ramsey as supreme court judge. Other nominees included F. F. Fancher for governor and Frank White for lieutenant governor.
Canton July 12 1900 McKinley says campaigns will differ from 1896 he will not address delegates during visits to Canton and plans limited campaign time due to pressing public business as president he seeks to focus on government questions rather than active campaigning.
In La Crosse Wisconsin on July 12, rivermen report a six tenths inch rise in the Mississippi over 46 hours. Sawmills here plan to resume soon though log supplies remain limited. water levels allow log transport from Black River after several weeks of shutdown due to log shortages.
Washington July 12 arrangements by the quartermaster's department for transporting two large stocks of sustainment stores and about 4 000 animals to Manila for troops ordered there. The present transport fleet was insufficient, necessitating chartering several additional vessels.
The last of the Indians at Little Canoe River departed for Rainy River reservations after an agreement with Canadian agent Ma Major Begg that they would return after the eighth if a major storm did not materialize. The Rainy River district reported no remaining danger. Across the ocean, Bavaria faces severe cold and snow with storms around Oberammergau and Lake Constance.
Twenty two rioters who wounded Hussars and attacked police in Stolz Pomerania during recent anti semite riots were sentenced to terms from four months in jail to three years in the penitentiary.
In Pittsfield Wisconsin on July 12 a boiler explosion wrecked the saw mill plant owned by Joseph Applepaker. No injuries are reported. The blast left the structure a total loss and halted operations at the site.
The boiler detached about 100 feet from its position. About 10 men worked at the mill and all escaped harm except three who were only slightly hurt.
A daring train holdup occurred at Santa Eula station near Chihuahua on the Mexican Central. Bandits derailed a freight train by pulling siding spikes, then attacked the crew as a passenger train arrived. Police and rurales pursued. one robber captured with some booty.
New York reports 24 more bodies recovered from the Saale fire tragedy, bringing total dead from the ship to 60 and overall victims on the Saale, river, and bay to 168. Most victims were unrecognizable, identified only by initials or names on clothing.
Nebraska fusionists led by Democrats Populists and Silver Republicans fail to reach a division of offices. Democrats demand treasurer and attorney general positions while Silver Republicans seek one seat. Populists offer one seat each for minority parties, with Democrats favored for attorney general. Bryan and Towne spoke in night sessions. Towne threatened to withdraw.
In Yankton South Dakota on July 12 the Democratic and Populist conventions organized briefly naming credentials resolutions and permanent bodies. H H Smith was elected temporary Democrat chair with John Wilson later becoming permanent chair. A conference committee of three was chosen to liaise with the Populists and Judge Pusey of Hand county was named state central committee chairman. The sessions adjourned until the morning.
Chicago faces loss of the Democratic national headquarters as hotels raise rates out of reach. Columbus bids high and may win if suitable quarters are not found in a Chicago business block. National committeeman Norman F. Mack urges notification in a large city, preferably New York, unless Bryan favors a Western city.
St Louis July 12 Adams Fuchs a leading milliner here has executed a chattel deed of trust for creditors. Liabilities about 18000 with assets not yet inventoried. Fuchs cites the strike as the sole cause of the filing noting street car traffic stoppage cut trade and prompted protection of creditors.
Berlin reports the German navy, long supplied by American canned meats, now must import English canned meats as no German goods are available. Also from Seattle the US assay office annual report shows 65,088 deposits totaling 13,630,324 dollars for the year ending June 30, a surge from 1899 levels.
London dispatches report an ominous Chinese crisis with no word from Europeans in Pekin for eighteen days. Li Hung Chang is said to be ordered to Pekin to announce the Pekin tragedy to the European powers and act as mediator. Dispatches from Tien Tsin warn that an advance is impossible before Sept. 1, with 80,000 to 40,000 troops needed and only 10,000 available.
Dispatch from Tien Tsin dated Friday reports General Ma defeating allied forces and reclaiming the eastern arsenal after a six hour engagement. Chinese defenders then used fort guns by the city walls while allies suffered heavy losses from a shortage of heavy guns and cavalry. The Japanese commander urgently sought reinforcements as a general defeat loomed.
A Shanghai dispatch reports an edict issued June 30 by the empress dowager condemning foreigners for the crisis. It mourns Baron von Ketteler, notes his visit to the tsungli yamen, regrets the Taku fort capture, orders Boxers to be suppressed, and protects foreign legations in Pekin while placing blame on foreigners.
In Minneapolis on July 12 probate court heard Julia Ging Broderick sister of murdered Catherine M. Ging seek final account allowance. Estate valued at $5068 with $2611.61 on hand distributed to heirs. Attorney William Henry Eustis listed $1425 for administration expenses and fees.
The Dakota and Great Northern is an extension recently incorporated in North Dakota to build a railway from Lakota through Nelson Ramsey Cavalier and Towner counties to the Manitoba border, a 60 mile line. Also a line from Bottineau north 80 miles.
In Washington July 12 the Navy secretary selected six submarine boat names Gramphus Shark Pike Porpoise Adder and Moccasin. At Cuiano July 12 two young women and a young man drowned attempting to change seats in a rowboat in the lagoon at Washington park.
