From Spearimas Camp dated January 21 General Warren reports continued engagement on the left flank. He says progress is substantial though difficult to measure as the ground is uphill and hostile fire is heavy. The campaign near Spraimans Camp notes enemy positions abandoned and Lancashire and Irish brigades pushing forward amid severe fire.

London reports censorship limits detail on General Buller’s moves at the Tugela. Saturday and Sunday clashes described as outpost actions with losses, while Boers retreat to prepared interior positions.
The British advanced over rough terrain capturing three Boer positions on a mountain as the Boers, firing at long intervals, retreated to rocky kopjes. The long day of musketry ended with the British in shelter behind boulders.
Rome Jan 22 Charles E Macrum former US consul at Pretoria arrives in Rome and travels to Paris. Mr Easton of the Washington Post says in Naples the Boers will be defeated but resist to the end praising Boer tactics and bravery on both sides. He calls the Afrikanders a permanent British danger and notes Transvaal ordered double cartridges from Germany before the war.
London January 22. The war office released General Buller's January 21 dispatch detailing casualties from the Venters Spruit engagement. It records wounded officers from multiple regiments including the Second Lancashire Fusiliers First Border Rifles and First York and Lancashire, among others, with 279 non commissioned officers and men also injured.
Lyttleton led a reconnaissance in force at Potgieters drift to test enemy strength and ease pressure on General Warren. The operation kept the enemy in trenches all day with 2 killed, 12 wounded, and 2 missing.
The War Office published a third supplementary list listing 28 non commissioned officers and men killed and 5 dangerously wounded from the January 6 attack on Ladysmith. Total casualties rise to 488.
Lord Roberts cables from Cape Town dated January 21 stating General French conducted a cavalry and artillery demonstration toward Hebron on Friday. Otherwise, French reports his situation remains unchanged amid ongoing operations.
Secretary Davis receives the Assistant Secretary of the Interior at Lorenzo Marques. He is informed that Kruger’s private car will convey him to the Transvaal.
Webster Davis United States assistant secretary of the interior arrived in Lourenco Marques en route to Pretoria and met Governor General Captain Alvaro don Ferriers who urged him to relay a message of friendship to President McKinley. The Transvaal envoy said Kru ger’s salon carriages would take him to Pretoria.
London reports hint that Webster Davis may be on a secret mission for President McKinley as a private car is seen carrying him from Lourenco Marques toward Pretoria. Washington denies an official trip while Continental papers seek government confirmation of any mission and travel purpose.
Washington report states Webster Davis not assigned any government mission to the Transvaal. Lonpoy Jan 22 John Ruskin died Saturday of influenza aged 81. Born in London in 1819 to a Perth wine merchant, he rose as a leading art critic authoring Modern Painters and The Seven Lamps of Architecture. His life included a famous marriage and divorce from his wife and Millais.
News from Shanghai reports that China has acceded to French territorial demands at Kang Chwan bay after two defeats. China deposes the Kang Chwan viceroy, appoints Li Hang Chang, orders the decapitation of the prefect, and pays 200000 taels to French families. French forces conduct operations in Tonquin, clash with Chinese troops, and threaten Canton as China yields.
