Dispatch from Durban hints at front fighting as British forces face rearward maneuvers. The war office reports no new news and says rumors of victory or relief for Ladysmith are unsubstantiated, noting that strong fighting is expected before any relief.
London dispatch reports that a major battle is imminent along the Ladysmith front as Buller’s forces, about 13 000–14 000 bayonets, 1 200 horsemen and 40 guns, prepare a combined movement. Reinforcements bring total to roughly 35 000 men with 80 guns. Boer positions lie entrenched in rough terrain.
General Buller confirms across Tugela at Potgieters drift with one artillery battery and Lyttleton's brigade. Warren crosses river by pontoon and aims to advance five miles by evening. Roberts notes movement of 300 men and seve nty fourth battery with mounted infantry, no other changes.

London Jan 19 A special Durban dispatch says Potgieter’s Daft dated yesterday reports Sir Charles arren arrived within 12 miles of the front and that Batik me are arriving at Mooi River field hospital by every train, indicating some severe fighting has occurred.
Census Director Merriam reports farmers are sending statements of 1899 operations to the census office. The inquiries ask about completeness and accuracy for next June enumerator questions. A Pennsylvania woman led with a detailed farm statement including crops, livestock, and value of miscellaneous products.
