In caucus Cullom is nominated by acclamation with Democratic Samuel Alsghuler of Aurora set to vote solidly.
Toronto reports J 21 Hill gains half million interest in the Crow's Nest Coal company and backs a 60 to 70 mile spur to connect the Great Northern and Crow's Nest mines. The move aims to intensify competition with Canadian Pacific railway, with Hill gaining a third of the increased capital to 3.5 million and guaranteeing coal shipments up to 6,000 tons daily.
Duluth reports Calumet and Hecla Copper Mining Company has secured controlling interest in 100000 acres on the Douglas county copper range near Superior Wisconsin. The group plans to spend at least 2 million dollars on exploration and development. Land previously owned by Frederick Weyerhaeuser and associates. A new company with Calumet and Hecla leadership will be formed to manage the project.
London January 18 The stop the war committee passes a resolution alleging that Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener favor a policy to starve women and children and to massacre unarmed prisoners The committee says copies of letters from a British army officer will be sent to Lord Salisbury Lord Roberts and others for action

Martin Reich, 62, living alone in Shamokin Pennsylvania, was attacked by five masked burglars who tortured him with red hot pokers to force disclosure of hidden cash totaling $133.60. After seizing the money, the assailants kicked him near death before escaping.
