General Buller reports from Frere Camp that General White says the situation is serious as British forces face renewed, heavy attacks. The Suffolk Regiment is cut off and Boers have taken about seventy. Kuruman garrison surrenders after a hard bombardment.
A Frere Camp dispatch dated January 6 reports General Clery's division marching from camp to attack Colenso with Hildyard on the left and Barton on the right. By 5:30 pm British guns shelled Boer positions as troops neared Colenso and forts along the river, with a thunderstorm overhead and enemy forts silent.
From Bechuanaland reports Kuruman fell to the Boers after a bombardment aimed at police barracks. The garrison surrendered at 6 p.m. yielding 120 prisoners including Captains Bates and Dennison and the magistrate Hill-yard, plus 8 officers and 70 natives with rifles revolvers ammunition and supplies.
In January reports say four companies attacked a Boer position. Lieutenant Colonel Watson was wounded and a retreat ordered. Seventy British soldiers were captured, including seven officers, after the engagement near the Boer forces.
A London dispatch notes General White’s forces repelling Boers this morning with bayonet charges as they closed to the defenders. Other reports say British troops retreating from Dordrecht and bombardment at Ladysmith intensifies with heavy guns and shells.
