Iron and steel prices rise in last half of 1885 report

A Swank review shows pig iron and steel rails surged in late 1885 led by output limits and stronger demand. Prices moved from 25.50 to 35 for rails and pig iron around 18, with rail production set to expand in 1886. Europe shows a weaker iron trade.

Bloodshed in Accomack County Virginia Melee

In Onancock Virginia ten white men from Sykes Island drink in Messenge Bridge. Jeff Freeman, a strong Black man, fights back with a navy revolver after a melee starts. Freeman is fatally wounded after shots are fired at Miles and in the ensuing pursuit through a church crowd. Warrants issued for several involved.

A Kind Act Rewarded by a Sailor’s Kinship

In Philadelphia two years ago a penniless sailor William Allanton asked for shelter and a drink from bartender J. T. Bauer. Bauer helped him and learned he was Henry Allanton of a landed estate in Hagish. The elder Allanton died. the younger inherited the estate and sent Bauer $6,000 as thanks. Earlier, Bauer also aided a railway laborer named Stanton who later returned to England and reconciled with his family. A separate report from Brooklyn notes a boiler explosion on the tug Niagara at the dock at foot of One Street, injuring none reported.

Murder suspects seized by sheriff in Martin county raid
