In Kansas City Missouri December 80 a slave woman owned by Joseph Hickman who became a leading farmer was kept on a farm as a sewing maid for twenty five years. After emancipation she learned she was free and sued Hickman’s estate for 1400 dollars wages at five dollars monthly. The Cooper county court awarded the plaintiff half the amount.

In Hancock Michigan, at Hurontown, a fire wrecked a dwelling early Sunday killing all eleven members of the Gross family, eight children and both parents, along with a visiting guest.
