Record of 1887 Rail Expansion Surpasses Prior Year

The Railway Age reports 12,724 miles of new main line track were added in 1887, led by the central western belt. Kansas 2,070 miles Nebraska 1,101 Texas 1,055 Colorado 818 Dakota 760 Michigan 100 Montana 616 Missouri 554 Indian Territory 499. Total U.S. mileage rises from 137,986 to 150,710 miles. Also notes Governor Marmaduke’s funeral set for Jefferson City with honorary pallbearers and state officials attending.

Right of Way Granted for Mexican Road to American

William H McWood a San Francisco capitalist returned from the City of Mexico with papers for a large concession. The new line will be a belt route tapping a rich mining region on the Pacific slope of the Sierra Madres. Construction begins in May and will take three or four years to complete.

Rumor says Seattle Lake Shore & Eastern railroad now under Pacific coast construction has been bought by James J. Gill and will join the Manitoba system. Lake navigation closed by last Camp voyage

The season of navigation on Lake Superior ended with the steamer Camp arriving at Lake Superior from Port Arthur laden with fresh fish. The Camp began the voyage two weeks earlier and endured bad weather. It completed its fifty fourth trip to Port Arthur this season, and despite likely nonfreeze, officials deem it best to cease further trips.
