Final Vote on Tariff Bill Split Along Party Lines
Washington December 27 The house passed a two and a half year tariff bill aimed at raising 40 million dollars for treasury relief with party line votes. Republicans mostly supported it except Hartman Montana, while Democrats and Populists opposed except Newlands. Debate was brief and the measure limits amendments. The bill restores 60 percent of McKinley rates on wool and woollens lumber and carpets, raises other rates by 15 percent, and expires August 1 1890.
