Mexico Quiet Once More
Report from Monterey notes the release of Acting Governor Sepulveda and the officer who ordered federal troops. About 120 of Sepulveda’s privates, who fired on federals and wounded or killed sixteen, were sentenced to ten years enlistment in the Fifth Cavalry at Monterey. A general disbandment of revolutionary forces followed and many leaders received governmental sinecures. A separate item from Ontario cites George William Roberts, a Cherokee Indian educated in the United States, claiming U.S. government authority to settle Indians and victimizing nearly 200 Indians. Washington authorities plan to arrest and prosecute him for swindling.
