A mine disaster leaves about 43 workers dead after a dynamite blast wrecks cars and timber. Of 67 men who descended to recover bodies, 24 returned by 11 this morning while the rest remain entombed amid afterdamp. The victims include several negroes and foreigners among North Carolinians.
Rain has fallen for nearly 80 hours, flooding streets in Chicago and Moreland. Hundreds are prisoners in their homes with sewerage failing and water reaching second stories. Improvised rafts aid crossings as streetcar traffic halts. Reports from Hinds, Iowa and Kansas note heavy rainfall. Fort Soti, Kansas, families seek higher ground after evacuations.
A Colorado based colony led by Gus Dasher from Greeley surveys land irrigable by the Edgemont canal in western Fall River County SD. Dasher finds strong opportunity for settlement and plans to return to Colorado to report findings.

In Atpany New York December 20 the Court of Appeals sustained the General Term and reversed the five and a half year conviction of Erastus Wiman for fraud, freeing him. The ruling follows a prior Supreme Court decision and locks in Wiman as a free man.
At the Catholic legation in Washington Mgr Satolli was presented with the zuchetto and the consistorial letter announcing his elevation to cardinalate. Marquise Sacrapanti, pope’s messenger, delivered the items in full uniform. The brief Latin ceremony included remarks by Mgr Satolli and was conducted after a short briefing in the private reception room.
Dan Curran and Minnie Taft went to Milwaukee government breakwater at midnight and took a large dose of morphine to die together. Found unconscious next morning Curran nearly recovered. doctors say he will live but the girl has little hope of recovery.
In Terre Haute Indiana on December 20 Eugene V. Debs longtime grand secretary of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen attended a meeting and withdrew from the organization. The move came amid growing hostility between the Brotherhood and the rival American Railway union and Debs was widely anticipated to leave the group.
Public officials named by the grand jury include Sheriff Atherton for allowing prisoner escape Probate Judge Basil malfeasance Police Judge Whiled and ex-president Henry E B Alford and Thomas Ewing charged with embezzlement of government funds. The Steamer Spree ran aground on Walden Ledge near Totland Bay passengers and mails evacuated by tug with no panic aboard.
Mining companies organize as articles of incorporation filed in ten days. Five mining corporations list capitals of one million dollars each, with shares divided into eighty thousand?
In New York on December 20, the Pacific Cable Company incorporators elected a board including J. Pierpont Morgan George Bowdoin Edmund K. Baylies J Kennedy Tod and James A. Soryenser. James A Soryenser became president and Edmund L Baylies was named vice president and acting treasurer. An executive committee was appointed to arrange raising capital to 10 million dollars.
Huron December 20. Judge Campbell finds the Melville Artesisan Well law constitutional. The decision reassures settlers fearing litigation and prompts active irrigation well digging. Several local townships had declined to vote for wells, anticipating legal challenges.
Representative Fairchild of New York introduces a bill to create a national military park on the Palisades of the Hadad region and to preserve the Palisades mountains from destruction by blasting and other agencies.
