Senate Debates Whisky Ban in Capitol Rule 18 Fails

In Washington on December 17 the Senate debated striking out rule 18 banning liquor sales in the Capitol. The motion failed 39 to 20. Amendments sought penalties for senators tolerating alcohol in committee rooms were defeated. Ingalls read the Senate wine list amusingly. Numerous bills and resolutions followed, including silver coinage, presidential disability, and Dakota territorial inquiry. The House moved to pass Lawton pension removal and discussed rule revisions and appropriation-committee distribution.

Great Leadville strike at Henrietta and Maid of Erin mines

Denver reports a major mineral strike on Carbonate hill near Leadville. The blanket vein ore body covers one to two acres, valued at about $20 per ton, with uncovered ore worth estimated between $4,000,000 and $8,000,000. Owners include D. H. Moffat ex-Senator Chaffee J C Wilson James Blaine and Tabor. Leadville and Denver mining men hail the find as proving enduring ore deposits in Leadville.

Brave Girl Saves Engineer At Edge Of Coal Mine Cave-In

A 10 year old girl Maggie Be hony living near Fowler's colliery at Yatesville shouted a warning as a loaded coal train approached a yawning breach caused by a cave in 800 yards long. The engineer halted the train at the edge of the chasm, sparing the crew from disaster. The Be hony family fled the area during the night and later received a substantial reward for the timely warning.

Representative Rankin injured in riding mishap near Princeton

AVisconats representative Rankin was injured Tuesday when his horse stumbled while out riding near Princeton. The report notes a painful injury as he recovers.
