Faulkner Confirmed as West Virginia Senator in Senate

The Senate, at Wasueron on December 15, adopted the report of the privileges and elections committee declaring Charles J. Faulkner duly elected senator from West Virginia and entitled to a seat. The oath of office was administered, and Faulkner was assigned to the committees on claims District of Columbia mines and mining and pensions. The president sent numerous recess postmaster nominations, including Daniel A. Mahoney and others from Wisconsin Iowa Minnesotan towns.

Refund War Tax Bill Reported Favorably

Washington details a bill by Senator Merrill to repay states the direct tax levy of 1861 amounting to over 17 million dollars. Winnipeg reports a disastrous fire destroying the gas works after an oil tank explosion. Harry Avery was killed instantly and the city faced total darkness. gasometer loss was several million cubic feet and value around $80,000 with no insurance. Separate note from Church's Ferry, Dakota Territory, details three arson fires at the Oriental hotel, prompting a frontier vigilante response and threats to shoot arsonists on sight. Damage to the hotel and contents totals about $600.

Fatal boiler explosion at Kentucky saw mill kills sawyer

Mount Sterling Kentucky December 15 a fatal boiler explosion occurred at the saw mill of Joe Lindsay Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock killing sawyer W D Stevenson and seriously injuring engineer Ben Lindsay. The 8000 pound boiler was thrown 125 yards tearing a machine shop through to a fence. Cause was low water in the boiler. lokale reports include a Cincinnati powder blast injuring a worker and others from Iowa to Pennsylvania noting fires and accidents across the region.
