A Winona merchant advertises a grand Surprise Party and a vast holiday stock. The store promises record low prices on counters marked 5 10 and 25 cents with toys, brass goods, silverware, and cutlery, aiming to revolutionize holiday pricing and attract large customer demand.
A fire alarm at 10 80 P M in Dr Wakefield's Kernville stable triggered a panic at Parkes Opera House during Uncle Tom's Cabin. About 600 spectators fled causing crush injuries and deaths. Killed include F Bigler Clara Burns Mrs Nester George Horner and others. police reportedly clubbed several to death. Coroner and jury ruled deaths from crushing in the theatre.
