Washington Dec 8 The United States senate began the second session of the Fifty fourth congress with crowded galleries and greetings but no business undertaken. The reading of the president's message was the feature and, beyond this, no action occurred. Printed copies were distributed for quick perusal as senators listened briefly before adjourning.
Washington news recounts a dull ceremonial opening as the House convenes with a solemn mood. The chaplain offers a blessing, the roll is called, and a three member committee visits the president to deliver the annual message read by Mr. Cleveland. San Francisco December 8 The Olympic club hoped to stage a 10 round heavyweight title bout bringing together Corbett and Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons refused to consider boxing 10 rounds for $15,000, ending the proposal.
A party of about 100 Rice county residents from Faribault Minnesota will depart later this month to establish a colony in Venezuela. Civil engineer Berty Adams, who led the original exploratory party last spring, will head the expedition that plans to name the new settlement Faribault.
Washington December 8 Secretary Carlisle has sent to the house speaker the appropriation estimates for the year ending June 30, 1898. Totals by title show legislative, executive, judicial, foreign intercourse, military, naval, Indian affairs, pensions, public works, postal service and miscellaneous obligations with overall figures around $21 71 718 970. The current year's estimates run to about $418 million, with appropriations including deficiencies at $432,411,605.
Fairfax Iowa December 8. An agent of the Milwaukee road repelled a highway robbery at Fairfax. He opened fire when approached by two bandits, killing one instantly and wounding the other. The wounded robber remains at large.
Detectives report positive proof that Baker Figlesthaler's flour was doctored with arsenic. An arrest is expected within hours. No deaths yet but about 200 people risked poisoning from bread bought at the north side bakery. Also Carlisle Indians plan football game with Wisconsin. date likely Dec 19 in the Coliseum under electric lights.
The Kansas City board of trade unanimously adopted a resolution asking the president and Congress to acknowledge Cuban independence and provide material aid to end the war. In Peterspur, Ind., W. W. Tucker fatally shot landlord Matthew McMurray after accusing him of improper intimacy with Tucker's wife. both fired, Tucker fled, McMurray a wealthy farmer died from the wound.
In Frankfort on December 8 a rumor from friends of Governor Bradley suggests he is despondent over fate and believes throat trouble stems from harassment of his office. The chatter implies he seriously contemplates resigning.
