A quotation from the New York Musical Courier dated September 28 1802 lauds the EMERSON Piano for its transformation into a true musical instrument since 1884 noting the difficulty of piano making and the unitary opinion of experts that EMERSON has achieved eminence and musical quality.
Washington December 3 The Democratic senators met in the afternoon for two hours to discuss session business and extend the steering committee from last session with Senator Gorman leading to coordinate with Republicans. Senator Vilas Wisconsin was chosen for the public lands committee vacancy caused by Senator Morgan. The main topic was the election of Northwestern state senators Montana and Wyoming with Gorman authorized to appoint a three member advisory committee to work with their state legislatures in contests and elections.
Dr. Hammett health officer for the District urged the House appropriation sub committe to boost the district health department funding. He called for more health inspectors garbage inspectors and funds to remove unhealthful matter citing the Asiatic cholera threat. For fiscal year 1894 about 800000 was asked to improve quarantine stations with 200000 current year and 100000 from last year available.
In Washington on December 8 the house committee on appropriations asked for all government deficiencies to assess the treasury's true condition and guide upcoming appropriations. The panel plans urgent bills and likely submits deficiency figures next week, anticipating a larger shortfall. The fortifications bill is also headed to the house next week. Senator Felton proposes an Arkansas swamp land settlement amendment, granting California a 6 percent share of swamp land sales within its borders.
Washindron Dec 8 The allotment bill for 160 acres to Ippewa Indians on White Earth reservation reached the senate calendar but no action taken. Senator Wabhburn spoke with Minnesota representatives on a joint resolution to protect Mille Lacs homestead settlers, which passed the senate last summer but stalled in the house. The mediation will be sent to the house as soon as feasible.
Mr Harter of Ohio introduced a bill in Washington proposing a tariff of one half of one percent per pound on all sugar imports effective February 1, 1898. It also calls for the final abolition of all bounties to U S sugar producers by February 1, 1904.
Senator Wash burn says remonstrances against the anti-option bill in the senate are inspired by exchanges and other organizations fighting the bill from the start. He finds no sentiment change among Democratic senators and notes the rise of 6 cents a pound in cotton has not shifted public opinion.
The Treasury Department bought 774,000 ounces of silver in a day with varied prices from .6825 to .8840 per ounce and bids totaling 808,000 ounces. The month’s purchases reach 1,224,000 ounces, including 175,000 at .8820 and 825,000 at .6960.
Washington December 8 The surveyor general of Minnesota recommends a resurvey of the northwestern boundary of the Red Lake reservation. The former survey left the boundary unmarked and requires clarification and marking.
Washington December 4. The secretary of the treasury transmitted to the house a communication urging an additional appropriation of $100,000 to cover the pay of custodians and janitors of public buildings in the United States. Commissioner Stone of the General Land Office endorsed the recommendation.
William C. Sayers, a French Creole inmate, admits Mafia affiliation and participation in the New Orleans chief of police Hennessy murder, saying he witnessed oaths, plots, and riots. He claims remorse and reports his involvement while roommates with four others. Police doubt the confession as possibly unbalanced or fake.
John M. Cohen a wealthy Philadelphia lawyer and financier was found dying from a self-inflicted bullet wound in his hotel room at the La Vila in Chicago. He died at Alexian Brothers hospital after authorities ruled the death a deliberate act during a period of insomnia and distress.
Ole Johnson of Moscow town was arrested Tuesday on an arson charge for setting fire to a large quantity of hay owned by B. J. Stoa. He is held to the grand jury.
At Asbexville Louisiana on December 8 four individuals perished when a skiff capsized during the night on Bayou Vermillin near Rosehill plantation. Local divers recovered the bodies and authorities investigated the drowning as the region reels from the tragedy.
