Crisp Plucks the Plum Debates End as Crisp Nominated

Washington December 8 After a long bitter struggle the Democrats nominate Charles F Crisp for speaker at the thirtieth ballot. The fight reflected divisions over tariff reform with Mills defeated and anti Cleveland factions backing Crisp. Moderate tariff Democrats express jubilation as the Fifty second Congress convenes.

Fifty second Congress Speaker caucus drama and vote

Democratic members met in the House hall to choose a speaker candidate. On ballots through the day Crisp Mills Springer and McMillin contended, Hatch withdrew, McMillin quit, and finally Crisp secured the nomination with Springer voting for him. The full House and Senate opened formally at noon amid crowds and an orderly session.

Smashed Caboose Wreck Kills Four. Gas Blast Hits Maryland Steel

A collision between a construction train and a freight at White Plains Missouri killed four men and injured about twenty in a caboose filled with workers. Separately at Sparrows Point Maryland Steel Works an underground gas explosion injured several workers with three later dying. hot bricks and flames spread as crews rescued the wounded.

Father and Daughter Die in Recent Blizzard Near Hallock

Drirtos North Dakota December 8 A farmer named Steve Olson and his daughter about 28 were driving from Hallock Minnesota to their home six miles northeast on the Minnesota side of the Red River. Their bodies were found Sunday frozen to death in the blizzard. The cutter overturned eighty rods away. the horse escaped and was found alive. Miss Olson was to marry Sunday to a Kennedy Minnesota business man.

Fountain City Missing After Terrific Gale

The Fountain City a large Milwaukee passenger steamer with twenty crew members is missing after grounding off St Joseph during a weekend gale. The Marquette escaped, three tugs assisted eight hours before separation and the Fountain City has not been sighted since, raising fears she sank.

Bank Robbery at Belle Center Burglars Take $12000

Belle Center Ohio reports a bold bank heist as burglars drilled through a burglar-proof safe and used dynamite to blow it open. About $12,000 in cash and several valuable papers were stolen. Bank officials say the loss won’t cripple operations and reserves were drawn from other cities. No arrests yet. Also: a thwarted train wreck near Terre Haute Indiana and the death of James H. Kellogg, ex-president of the New York State Temperance Society, after a stroke.

Fatal Mine Accident In Patton Mine

Wess Crry Missouri December 8 A fatal accident occurred in the Patton mine on Center creek. H Titus lost his life and George Kane was probably fatally injured as rope control failed while lowering into the shaft causing a 185 foot fall.

The Tenth Victim Died After Train Accident

George James the actor, scalded in the Nov 28 collision of a Flint and Pere Marquette train with the Lake Shore express rear coach, died at St Vincent's hospital at 6 30 p m. He is the tenth death. Excavations at Pompeii reveal five more rooms of curiosities opened near the old Forum.
