Natural Gas Causes Fatal Explosions in Pittston

Three Grant street buildings were wrecked by natural gas explosions on Friday afternoon in Pittston Pa. One young woman Katie E Knapp was fatally injured and seven or eight others were severely burned. The Meehan residence suffered the fiercest blast as Knapp, a domestic worker, opened a cellar lamp amid flames. Loss is about 30000 dollars and a public meeting to discuss precautions was planned.

Cost and Strength of the Army Developments

The War Department reports 1885 outlays of 45.85 million with 18.16 million on public works and a 1886 appropriation of 81.76 million. 1887 estimates reach 81.78 million but reduced to 48.20 million with 16.47 million for public works. The army’s consolidated returns show 2,154 officers and 24,705 enlisted. Great Omaha Windstorm Causes Widespread Damage
