Washington Dec 6 The Post reports that after the Republican caucus adjourned a long forgotten rule allowing committee member appointments except the chairman by a plurality of votes was found to exist. The rule, in force since 1820, has been superseded in practice by party leadership agreements and unanimous consent.
Senator Squire of Washington introduces a bill for a general coastal defense system. It would fund 87 million dollars over 19 years at key sites including New York San Francisco Philadelphia and New Orleans and also fortify Great Lakes navigable rivers and estuaries like Puget Sound and Hampton Roads. The measure emphasizes the need for adequate national protection.
In San Francisco on December 5 the tug Barclay Golden, under Captain Hansen with eight crew, cleared for Acapulco to aid General Ezeta. The ship carried coal and sores and included two or three passengers aboard. Customs officials did not object to the clearance.
Reports from Denves indicate threats against W. Van Honten over the 1894 killing of Richard Newell Midway Terminal railway superintendent. Sailors rescued from the schooner Boscobel after it struck a bar off Turtle Light and sank in deep water. Seven crew were saved by the ing Roy and brought to the city. The vessel will be raised soon and contributed to Armenians Relief. Observatore reports a Constantinople letter noting the pope's response to Armenian misery.
In New York on a December day Corbett refuses to meet Fitzsimmons for the $16,000 purse offered by Dan Stuart of Texas. Brady, Corbett’s manager, delivers the firm reply that they have retired from the proposed theatrical engagement and will not break up the arrangement. Stuart proposes to match Mahar against Fitzsimmons and press the winner fight. The meeting with Brady occurred at the St James Hotel with Phil Dwyer and Jos Wendig present.
Compliments to Mr. Phillips Washington December 5 report that labor organizations nationwide are pressing to appoint Representative Phillips of Pennsylvania as chair of the labor committee. The move is mostly ceremonial as Phillips is not a labor member but an employer with oil interests in Pennsylvania.
A petition for divorce was filed in the circuit court by Mrs Carrie H Hofmeister against her husband W W Hofmeister supreme recorder of the Legion of Honor. The plaintiff charges general immorality violation of the marriage vows and drunkenness.
Ed A Paradis appeared before the grand jury in St Paul on December 5 and purged himself of contempt by answering questions he had previously refused. He said his conscientious scruples were eased by the druggist against whom his testimony would affect.
A Chicago syndicate led by John R. Walsh president of the Equitable Trust Company bought the Akron Gas company from Detroit capitalists for 500000 dollars. The sale was reported December 5 in Akron.

Minister Terrell reports all American missionaries in Turkey safe and protected. Notice served upon John R. Searles, secretary of American Sugar Refining Co., New York, restraining the company from doing business in the state.
