Income tax plan confines to corporations and successions

Washington reports that the Ways and Means Committee will limit the income tax to net earnings of corporations and to successions and legacies. Proposals for a broad personal income tax over $5,000 were dropped, with officials arguing corporations bear the main tax burden. A separate path would tax cigarettes and playing cards, while whisky taxes remain unsettled. Minnesota Alliance set for Minneapolis meeting January 7 as prep continues. The mint report shows FY1893 deposits and coinage figures, including $30,038,140 gold and $5,848,715 silver coinage.

City sues over plant rights and $500000 damages

The city seeks pecuniary damages of 500000 from the company claiming it has prevented the city from acquiring the plant and asserting the company has no rights to the pipes and mains in the streets.

Congress to withdraw mineral lands in Minnesota

Washington reports that Congressman Baldwin will introduce a bill to extend general Shining laws to Minnesota, withdrawing mineral lands in the northern part of the state from homestead entry to prevent mining grab. The bill, drafted by Land Commissioner Lamoreaux, cancels such homesteads as violations of the homestead law. Chicago Library Building Dedicated. The cornerstone was laid with Mayor Swift and others predicting a premier library costing about $2,000,000, four stories tall, on a full city block with 3,000,000 volumes and a large auditorium. Powderly's Successor. James R. Sovereign arrives in Philadelphia to assume duties as head of the Knights of Labor. Curcaco, Rev. Edward J. Dunne consecrated bishop of Dallas in an imposing All Saints ceremony attended by many priests. May Terminate the Receivership. Judge Caldwell will reopen on Dec. 6 the question of terminating the receivership of the Kansas City Wyandotte and Northwestern railway. The Army of Lumbermen. Hinckley Minn reports over 4000 lumbermen employed in Pine county with substantial cutting and hauling underway. South Dakota Institutes. South Dakota Agricultural College faculty plan farmers institutes across the state during winter. Big Coal Shipments. Prerendale reports Thursday coal shipments of 4,087,000 bushels, including some to Cincinnati and St. Louis.
