A Successful Colony in Iowa from the Ebenezers
In 1812 a Hessian immigrant group of about five hundred formed the Ebenezers near Buffalo New York, built farms and mills, later moved to Iowa by 1856 57 increasing to around 1300 members. They practice common ownership with individual homes, operate vineyards and mills, and govern by a thirteen member board. They maintain plain dress and buildings, have schools and churches, and use German in business while teaching English.
