A bridge over the St Mark river collapsed after floods from storms. About eighty natives were drowned, ten killed, and many hurt as the bridge tumbled into the torrent and bodies were swept to sea. Jacksonville, Fla. reports also mention fire losses of a million dollars and other mishaps.
A collision between two SS passenger trains near Ostrowo and Loswitz in Prussian Poland killed ten people and injured many more. Coal from the locomotives ignited the wreck, causing some victims to burn as rescuers worked amid the rubble.

Washington August 19 The first day of the nineteenth annual regatta of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen was held on the Potomac with a large crowd. Junior singles were won by Eming of Boston and Wright of Toronto, while the doubles semi finals saw Albanys prevail in heat one and Varunas of Brooklyn in heat two. Distress Largely Overrated a Berlin dispatch to The Times claims free trade critics exaggerate grain distress and notes winter rye yield.
Members including G W Beong from Dexter and H Keller of Stearns County oppose Prince plan to call an extra legislative session. A chamber of commerce meeting featured a communication from Hon J S Prince opposing the extra session, suggesting funding by popular subscription with engraved certificates and widespread patriotic participation to raise funds.

Washington reports that the Cacabhara silver mines lie about sixty miles from Puno near the Bolivian border, at seventeen thousand feet elevation. The region is described as rich in silver ore with wealth said to be vast and incredible in extent.
A Pittsburg scientist, Thomas Harrington, reports experiments on nickel steel and manganese bronze leading to the discovery of a new metal. The metal boasts very high tensile strength, corrosion resistance to acids, and can be wrought into spikes and nails hot or cold.
Governor Toole was informed that following a petition from Custer County citizens the cavalry detachment has been ordered from its Tongue river camp to the Indian agency on that river. Military commanders say the force will be sufficient to guard the interests of both Indians and settlers.
