Washington reports General Chaffee received a Conger dispatch from Pekin dated August 4. Conger says they will hold on until relief arrives and urges sending information. Officials view the messages as encouragement and affirm the drive toward Pekin as rapidly as possible.
Paris Aug 18 The tsungli yamen complained of delays by foreign ministers in Pekin and refused to assume casualties. M Delcasse replied no order to depart Pekin will be given while the route is unsafe and the Chinese government bears responsibility for any casualties. He urged China to allow allied forces to clear the road from Tien Tsin to the capital for protection.
Sir Robert Hart’s ciphered Pekin message dated Aug 5 says the sooner they can leave the capital the better as it is inconvenient for Chinese government and unsafe for foreigners. The Morning Post notes it implies the Chinese seek safety of foreigners or evacuation. Sheng fears for legation members as defeated troops return. Austrian commander says allies rested three days after Yangtze Yang Tay capture.

Deluge along Yellowstone river in Montana floods bridges and washes fills between Glendive and Billings on the Northern Pacific line.
Milwaukee seeks a double Labor Day program with Governor Roosevelt and William J. Bryan possible speakers on Sept. 8. Henry Payne backs Roosevelt for the forenoon talk then a Chicago trip, with Bryan to Milwaukee if secured for an evening address. Mayor Harrison will attend Milwaukee and Mayor Rose will speak in Chicago.
A Southern Pacific passenger train No.9 derailed on the Lacasine bayou trestle near Larr Cares Louisiana injuring many aboard. The tender jumped the track causing nine coaches to scatter. only one Pullman remained on the rails as the trestle collapsed and about 150 passengers faced a mud and water crash with one boy killed, Tred Chattin.
Paris reports a collision during French fleet maneuvers off Cape St Vincent between the battleship Brennus and torpedo boat Framee. The Framee sank with 4 officers and 58 men saved. about 50 feared dead. The France, a 310 ton recent addition, involved in the incident.
In Bluffdale, near Cleburne Texas, six white boys visited a farmer's watermelon patch. They ate doctored melons laced with strychnine after receiving a note promising more melons. Two died in the patch, two on the way home, and two after reaching home.
Victoria August 18. The government announced plans to abolish the 10 percent royal t y and to set up a Dawson government assay office to value gold at its exact worth with certificates cashable at face value. A small export duty on gold will be imposed, and two Dominion MPs will be elected from Dawson in October.
The War Department received a cablegram from General MacArthur in Manila reporting that on August 12 Colonel Grasse near Tayaga surrendered command to Colonel Freeman of the Twenty fourth United States Infantry. The force consisted of one major six captains six lieutenants 169 men 101 rifles and 50 bolos.
In Sioux City Iowa on August 18 Rev Father W E Fowler pastor of St Josephs Catholic church received a Rome letter dated July 29 confirming Archbishop Keane's appointment to the archdiocese of Dubuque to succeed Archbishop Hennessy who has died. The letter was written by Cardinal Farcisco Satoli.
Charles R. H. Ferrell, ex Adams Express employee, confessed to killing Express Messenger Lane and robbing the way safe on a Pennsylvania east bound train. He planned the crime to fund his imminent marriage to Lillian Costelow. One thousand dollars recovered. Ferrell arrested at his sweetheart's home.
A passenger train collided with an omnibus returning from a funeral three miles east of Slatington, Pennsylvania. Fifteen people were killed instantly and seven injured, many relatives of the deceased being aboard. The bus driver tried to cross before the train but could not avert disaster, and no warning watchman was present at the crossing. The engine and car were a special train, with horses pulling the omnibus escaping unharmed.

National League notes Chicago and Pittsburg split a Chicago game while St Louis and Brooklyn games are listed. Ex Governor Scott of South Carolina died at Napoleon Ohio after apoplexy. Victor Emmanuel III received senators and deputies for a funeral and coronation. Dwight L Bell, aged 86, longtime engineer for the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific, died in Bridgerton after establishing colonies in the West and Southwest.

Edward Marble the playwright dies in Brooklyn at 54. Foot and mouth disease widespread in Europe. Italian societies in Chicago join sorrow over King Hawbert’s death. Mme Elsie Camacho dies suddenly on a Pennsylvania train near Newark en route to Jersey City.
