A Daily Express dispatch from Aug 2 reports the American and British forces began advancing toward Pekin last Thursday. The main allied body reportedly started July 80 but delays by General Chaffee and General Dorward slowed progress. Chinese forces attacked Tien Tsin on Aug 1, yet the allies repulsed them though fear of street fighting risks heavy casualties.
Aug. 6 Lonpoy reports nothing direct from allies beyond Tien Tsin. A Shanghai dispatch says a battle with General Ma and 10,000 Chinese is expected at Yang Tsun. Russians and French guard communications for the American British Japanese advancing column.
Senator H M Teller says the China situation requires immediate Congress assembly. He asserts the president can only declare war with a congressional act and the army should be withdrawn unless Congress orders otherwise. He calls for protection of diplomats as a prerequisite.
An imperial decree dated August 2 authorizes foreign ministers in Pekin to communicate freely with their governments and orders their departure for Tien Tsin with a strong escort. Sheng, director general of railways and telegraphs, relayed the information to consuls at Shanghai via The Temps dispatch dated August 5.
London reports Aug 6 that Li Hung Chang did not commit suicide. Telegrams from Shanghai say the rumor is without foundation and that Li Hung Chang is alive though in a very despondent state.
King Leopold signed a decree prohibiting export of arms and ammunition from Belgium to China. Belgian manufacturers react with fury while the government maintains its firm stance on the embargo.
United States embassy reports from Shanghai via Malta to Ambassador Porter that daughters of Mr Squires first secretary at Pekin are safe. The message dated July 1 confirms their education at a Paris convent.
Minister Wu met acting secretary Adop in Washington and handed a cablegram from his government about transmitting messages between the Pekin foreign ministers and their governments. It is understood this was only a precautionary measure.

A Shanghai dispatch dated Aug 6 says after Li Hung Chang left Canton the imperial troops joined the Boxers. Yangtse provincial troops remain quiet due to the viceroy of Nankin promise to foreign consuls. Boxers are murdering missionaries in South China but not touching treaty ports. Troops are secretly moved to treaty ports and Yangtse river batteries are being repaired and new ones erected at Sung. Five guns mounted despite viceroy’s pledge to stop work. The British are accused of a secret understanding with the viceroy aiding indifference to fortifications at Wu Sung.
Japanese newspapers denounce Kaiser William’s speech to his troops calling for vengeance for Baron von Ketteler’s death. TheMainichi questions if China should be blamed for rebel crimes and deems the address undignified for a Christian monarch in Victoria British Columbia.
President McKinley approved a provisional plan for December centennial events in Washington with a morning reception at the executive mansion for the governors, commemorative exercises in Congress, and a military and naval parade. The District of Columbia board of commerce led the planning and will chair the committee.
William J Bryant in New York City on August 12 1886 declares the gold standard ruinous to merchants and manufacturers warning of economic distress.

A Pretoria dispatch says General Christian Dewet is completely surrounded near Reitsburg and cannot escape the British cordon. The Boers intend to stand at Machadodorp while General Hamilton blocks reinforcements to Commandant Botha. A derailed train near Honigspruit killed four after Boers fired on the area. Pretoria residents face exile for cruel acts against British subjects, with terms up to 25 years.
London reports General Hunter has captured 3 046 horses and guns in addition to 41 prisoners from the Ho ningspraikt area. Lord Roberts notes engagements in the Magaliesberg as General Tan Hamilton presses toward Rustenburg. Wounded include Lieutenant Colonel Rhodes and Major Williams. Four men killed and three wounded when a train was attacked near Kroonstad. Lennox and 40 men captured but released at American consul general's request. Reports also mention a Knox attack north of Kroonstadt and unconfirmed news of General Dewet's shell wound death.
London reports from Aug 6 indicate South African hostilities may end soon as the war remains unsettled. General Hunter’s prisoners near 4,000. Kitchener commands against Devwet’s commando while a Boer diversion at Frederickstadt is contained. Hamilton’s relief march pressures Baden-Powell at Rustenburg despite Methuen rumors.
Dispatch from Foouriorsberg notes 2,500 Boer prisoners at Hun ter's camp and 1,500 prisoners with 9 guns at Hamilton's camp. About 6,000 in Caledan valley earlier refused Prinsloo surrender and fled. they now seek terms. Also Baden-Powell wounded, according to Transvaal advices via The Daily Express.
Daniel Howard of Pineville Kentucky, a wealthy Bell County citizen aged 68, was killed by his son George after an alcohol fueled dispute. George allegedly fired after Daniel drew a gun, ending the confrontation instantly. Berry Howard, a cousin, faces an indictment linked to Governor Goebel's murder.
Four men are dead and one wounded after a shooting feud in Daerum Missouri between William Dooley and his four sons and the Harris brothers. Victims named include William Dooley W H Harris James Harris and John Dooley with Frank Harris fatally wounded.
