Washington Aug 6 The first session of the fifty first Congress adjourned with little ceremony. President and cabinet members attended, and in the closing minutes he signed the rural and private bills, including a two and a half million appropriation for the world’s fair, before adjourning until December.
The day saw the House resume the Durborow World’s Fair bill with sharp exchanges over a proposed minting plan. Final passage passed 181 to 38, while a pension debate and adjournment moves filled the evening. The Senate quickly backed the sundry civil bill and prepared for adjournment.
Speaker Crisp declared the first session at 11 o clock, gavel down, then the House of Representatives adjourned for the day amid shouting supporters and a flurry of goodbyes as the chamber emptied within half an hour.
A long effort culminates in the Casey bill granting relief to settlers in the Red River valley. After negotiations last summer and supreme court findings, the bill passes both houses. Senator Pettigrew supports concurrent amendments and the measure is sent to the president for signature, becoming law at 10 p.m. relief to many settlers follows.
President Harrison departed Washington after 11 p.m. for Loon Lake to visit his wife and will likely be away about a month. Mrs. Harrison's latest report said she enjoyed a half hour ride and was improving, while the president asked not to be disturbed by press or public during the stay.
A St. Louis report claims pressure from Catholics and a Blaine letter endorsed Archbishop Ireland for cardinal. President Harrison reportedly refused a prior letter to the pope but later backed the idea, saying Ireland’s elevation would delight American Catholics and himself.
Indianapolis Aug 6 The Iron Hall litigation shifts toward settlement as the executive committee backs Somer by a large margin. Plaintiffs offer to drop the suit if an investigation is held by a trio chosen by both sides, but the committee rejects the plan though negotiations continue. Kansas City reports a scorching 99.5 degrees with many streets at 100 as southwest winds blow from a furnace mouth. Heat shriveled corn across southern Kansas raising fears of near total crop failure unless rain arrives within forty eight hours.
A severe hail and wind storm swept Litchfield Minnesota locally devastating crops and property. The hail path stretched five to six miles from Eden Valley southeast toward Dasse and Hutchinson with Litchfield at the center. Buildings pushed from sidewalks, basements flooded, and a Great Northern freight train struck a herd of cattle killing several and injuring the engineer.
A new 212 mile pipeline project backed by the Independent Producers' Protective Association will run from Bradford to Hancock New York with refineries at Newburg expected to operate by spring. The $12 million line connects northwestern independent refiners to New York markets via the NY Ontario and Western rail line.
In Union political gathering Columbia Aug 6 Governor Tillman and Colonel Orr clashed over profanity. Tillman denied flaunting swearing, admitting one slip. Orr accused Tillman of profanity and sought priestly confirmation. Orr moved toward Tillman before temper cooled and the confrontation ended without violence.
Ferdinand Ward once called the Napoleon of Wall Street is engaged to marry a 25 year old daughter of a well to do East Haddam citizen. He recently left Sing Sing and now occupies pricey quarters at a local hotel. The couple met recently and plan a fall wedding, prompting social gossip in the area.

Visalia California August 6 two men who robbed a Wells Fargo safe blew open the express car near Fresno with dynamite bombs. They were captured near Visalia this afternoon after an exciting chase in which Deputy Whitney was shot in the neck by the flying thieves. Suspects identified as Chris Van and John Ehret.

A stranger calling himself James Bailey from West Point Indiana was arrested on suspicion of stealing a mare worth 840 dollars. The animal was traced to Andy Canby of the county and Bailey is jailed.

An official return shows cholera deaths in Paris totaling 21 with 11 in suburbs for the past week, compared to 14 in Paris and 15 in suburbs the prior week.
